What's Your Health Care Plan?

August 9, 2017

What is your Health Care Plan?

Most people will automatically think “Health Insurance” when they hear the words, “Health Care Plan”.  But I am talking about something a bit different.  What I am referring to is …

What is YOUR plan to take care of your health?

Before I begin, let me be clear that I think it is important to have health insurance.  I have it because if something goes wrong with my health and I need a medical doctor, I will go and see one.

The Health Care Plan I am talking about are the choices you have committed to that impact your health in a positive way that will keep you in as vibrant health and high energy as possible and that wards away illness as much as possible.

I had a conversation with a client last week about headaches.  I recommended that they completely eliminate artificial sweeteners {like diet coke}.  I suggested that they would likely find that their headaches would decrease dramatically.

I shared my history with migraines and how I discovered quite quickly that chocolate is a huge migraine trigger for me and so I simply don’t eat it at all.  They said, “Wow, that is a lot of discipline.”  I disagree.  It is a choice.  Because for me, the desire NOT to have a migraine far outweighs my desire for chocolate.  My choice is part of my Health Care Plan that contributes to my overall health and wellbeing.

dis·ci·pline:  the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience.

{**for me, eating chocolate is not an act of disobedience that needs to be corrected.}

choice:  an act of selecting or making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities.

{**choices empower me and give me a lot of options and creativity}

I thought I would share with you what my Health Care Plan looks likes:

{please note… this is what I strive for most days, I is by no means perfect or 100% consistent…. but I do my best.}

~7-9 hours of sleep every night.  I know I do best on 8-9 so that is what I shoot for.  If for some odd reason I only get 7 hours of sleep, I need a 30 minute nap in the afternoon and that sets me just right!

~2 Liters of water every day.  I am good most of the time with this.  I often find that when I am hungry, I am really thirsty.  And when  I feel tired in the afternoon, I am usually really thirsty.

~Exercise 4-6 days a week.  This is FULL of variety for me in order to keep me interested and inspired.  It consists of lifting weights, HIIT, walking, yoga.  I like to cycle through these exercises and different modalities.  I don’t belong to a gym.  I do all of this at home with minimal to no equipment.

~ I eat intuitively:   For most of my life, I have experimented with different diets and ways of eating ranging from Vegetarian {for 8 years} all the way to Paleo / Ketogenic.  I have filled my brain with way too many rules and restrictions that in the end, actually made my health {mental, emotional, and physical} worse.

What does does it mean to eat intuitively?  I listen, I listen to what my body is asking for and within that I make the healthiest choice for me.  For example, last night I wanted a great big bowl of pasta.  So, I made a delicious bowl of brown rice pasta with tomato sauce and broccoli.

I no longer adhere to other people’s rules.  I make my own choices.  And yes, I eat bread and drink beer.

~ I spend as much time outside and in nature as possible.  For me, being in nature heals me on all levels body, mind, soul.

~ I receive bodywork.  I receive some kind of bodywork 2-3 times a month.  This is not negotiable.  I work hard caring for others and in order to do that, I have to mitigate my stress, aches, and pains by allowing someone to care for me.  I receive Bowen, Reflexology, Cupping, and Triggerpoint work.

My wish is that this may inspire you to create your own individualized Health Care Plan that works for you.

Remember to create something that works for you and you can maintain with joy and ease.

I would love to hear what you come up with!  Please share in the comments!
