Friday Favorites :: Migraine Edition

Here is my chronic migraine / headache story...

I had my very first migraine when I was 6 years old. I remember lying on a cot in the nurse's office in grade school. They had no idea what to do with my and they couldn't reach my mother. I was experiencing every classical symptom of a migraine with aura.... Nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to all light, unbearable stabbing pain in my head. It was awful, I was terrified. I didn't know what was happening.

I was diagnosed with chronic migraines at a very young age, 6 years old. This started my life journey of trying to figure out what my triggers are and how to best treat my migraines and headaches as naturally as possible.

I am now 52. I know what my triggers are.... mostly. Because sometimes they change and sometimes, there are new ones. It is an ongoing process of figuring them all out. Basically they are a combination of environmental factors like artificial chemicals and barometric pressure, stress, and food.

I would like to share with you some of the things that I have found to be helpful in reducing the frequency as well and the symptoms of migraines and headaches.

#1. BOWEN THERAPY.

Getting regular bodywork that focuses on Vagus Nerve Regulation / Down regulation of the Sympathetic Nervous System is critical in reducing the frequency of migraines and headaches.

Within the Bowen system, there are several protocols that specifically address Migraines and headaches that really work. I can speak to this from my own personal experience as well as seeing my clients have a reduction in migraine and headache frequency.

#2. Minerals and electrolytes.

Many of us are mineral deficient and if you are like me and drink Reverse Osmosis or Distilled water, you most certainly are.

This was recommended to me and when I use it regularly, it really helps.

#3. Essential Oils

Peppermint. Peppermint oil is one of the most commonly used essential oils to treat headaches and migraine attacks. It contains menthol, which can help relax muscles and ease pain.

Basil. “Scientists looking into the effects of basil essential oil on migraine found that it decreased the intensity and frequency of migraine over 3 months, and higher doses of basil oil may produce more improvements”

#4. Reiki Therapy

Reiki has been shown to dramatically reduce pain and frequency of migraines and headaches. It has been really helpful for me to reduce stress and any pain that I have from a headache / migraine.
